Utility terrain vehicles or UTVs, also known as side-by-sides owing to their bench-style or bucket-style seats that let riders sit in pairs, are a popular type of powersports vehicle. These  rugged vehicles are capable of handling any type of terrain, so they can help you with your work or provide you with transportation for a fun off-roading adventure. What Is a UTV?

UTVs, as noted above, are a type of powersports vehicle that is about the third of the size of a typical passenger vehicle. They have four wheels with knobby tires to grip tough terrain, and they’re operated similarly to a car, with a steering wheel and gas/brake pedals. Some models may offer seatbelts and an enclosure or soft top, but many are open to the air. 

UTVs can typically seat between two and six passengers in pairs, leading to their alternative name of “side-by-sides.” There is also usually some space for cargo between the seats and at the rear of the vehicle.
 

Safety Considerations

Whether you’re operating or riding in a UTV, you must wear a helmet that is designed for powersports riding. A motorcycle helmet can work, too. Make sure you’ve also got goggles or a full face-mask to protect your eyes from debris. 

Long clothes that fit you closely and protect your skin will help shield you from branches and anything else that could scratch you while you’re riding. Riding gloves and boots will help protect your hands and feet.
