Suzuki® Powersports Vehicles

Even if you’re not in the powersports circuit very often, you’ve probably heard of Suzuki®. This is partially thanks to their illustrious vehicle line, but it’s also simply because they make excellent products. But to know how they got to this point, we have to go back. Way back. Early History

The beginnings of Suzuki actually date back to 1909, before any of their products were mobile. Michio Suzuki opened Suzuki Loom Works in Hamamatsu, Japan. Initially, they only manufactured weaving looms and machines, but eventually, Suzuki wanted to expand the products the company offered. In 1937, they developed the first compact car prototype with innovative liquid-cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engines. The release of their first vehicle put them on the map, sustaining their success through the next couple decades.

Then in 1952, the company expanded. This time, they released the Power Free, a motorized bike with a 36cc, one-horsepower engine. It was just a place to start, but by 1956, they were releasing 6,000 motorcycles every month (with stronger designs and more power) and even surpassed their automobile division. They developed a crucially strong foothold in the post-war economy, which ultimately propelled them through the second half of the 20th century. 

Competition

Suzuki soon became a big name not only on public roads, but also in the racing circuit. Starting in 1962, Ernst Degner rode a Suzuki bike and won the company’s first motorcycle racing world championship grand prix in the 50cc class, putting Suzuki on the professional map in a big way. Degner even went on to help them design the company’s 50cc and 125cc engines, and bring home an additional five titles in the 50cc category in six years.

In 1961, New Zealand native Hugh Anderson also joined the Suzuki racing team. Anderson would win both the 50cc and 125cc championships in 1963 and retained his 50cc title the next year. 1965 saw another 125cc win from Anderson, and the Suzuki racing team would continue to dominate the track. Even today you’ll find these bikes ahead of the pack, as in 2016 when Maverick Viñales took home the British Grand Prix win.
