History of KTM Motorcycles

The company emerged in the 1930s as an Austrian-based company. The initials in the name all stood for something related to motorcycles and the company identity. The "K" stood for "Kraftfahrzeug" which means motor vehicle in German. The "T" stood for "Trunkenpolz", which honors company founder Hans Trunkenpolz. The "M" stood for "Mattighofen", which refers to the town where the company headquarters is found.

Before World War Two, the company served as a vehicle repair shop. When the war ended, demand for vehicle repair plummeted. The focus then became developing their own motorcycles. In 1951, the first prototype was completed and was called the R100. Investor Ernst Kronreif later became a shareholder in the company and the "K" changed to refer to him.

When Trunkenpolz and Kronreif passed away in the early 1960s, Hans' son Erich took over. He expanded the company over the next several years, including an expansion to the United States in 1978. While the company broke out into four different entities after his death, three of them later were reunited by 2015. Over the years, KTM consistently produced high quality dirt bikes and maintained a loyal fan following throughout all the changes.
